The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
